It doesn’t matter where it originated, an anime is still an anime. For example, a lot of anime and manga comes from Korea.
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a wholesome, American-made anime. In my opinion, it is one of the best and attention getting anime out there, and I have watched a lot of Japanese-made animes. Avatar is a show that makes you feel good after watching it and sometimes gets you to say up until the early hours of the morning to watch it over and over again. Watching the characters grow, develop, and eventually find their place in the world is an amazing trait in Avatar.
For the “IS IT AN ANIME OR NOT?” debate, here’s what I have found:
The definition of an anime is a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes (from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anime).
Anime is a STYLE ORIGINATING FROM JAPAN, not does not HAVE to be FROM Japan. This is an AMERICAN-MADE anime. AMERICAN creators got the design from JAPANESE anime and the fighting, names, and cultural background from CHINA. Avatar in really a combination of different cultures; quite amazing if you think about it.
So, yes, Avatar IS AN AMERICAN-MADE ANIME.
Oh and technically every animated show (anime or not) is a cartoon. A cartoon is a motion picture that is made from a series of drawings, computer graphics, or photographs of inanimate objects (as puppets) and that simulates movement by slight progressive changes in each frame.
So, Avatar is an American-made anime AND a CARTOON. Bleach, Naruto, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, etc. are Japanese-made animes and CARTOONS!
You sir are correct. Just because its not made in Japan doesn’t mean its not anime, Its on this website therefore its anime, I’m American and if i draw an anime painting… it will still be anime! This is because anime is a type of drawing style. Yes the style originated in Japan, but that has nothing to do with it. If a company in Japan made a show that looked like, oh lets say, Ed Edd N Eddy then they would call it a CARTOON! They wouldnt call it an Anime just for originating in Japan. So this is an anime… (just look at their god-damn eyes!!!!)
Ayyy avatar is an anime in its essence but truly and really its not actually an anime it posses anime like qualities but everyone knows anime is japanese anime since avatar is an american animated series (never came or was dubbed from japan) it is an american cartoon…lets just agree to disagree =] lol Awsome show tho 10/10

Now thats the way to end a show. nothing sad to mar the moment, the memories remain untainted. in other words i give Avatar a 10/10.

Its not really an “Anime” Its an American Anime or just an american Cartoon.
avatar isn’t really an anime but it does have kind of an idea like it but its not an anime i used to watch this alot when i was younger i’ve been watching it for old times sake

This is an awesome series but it isn’t anime. The martial arts the bending is based off of aren’t even Japanese, they’re Chinese. It is just an American cartoon made for kids by Nickelodian.
Avatar is a show made in USA, but I belive that anime is a kind of animation that first of all just has big eyes and stuff. :D
